About the role
The Heavy Equipment Drivetrain & Powertrain Specialist is responsible for advanced diagnosis, troubleshooting, repair and complete overhauling of complex transmissions, axles, differentials, final drives and hub assemblies on heavy construction machinery, ensuring efficient power transfer and minimal downtime.
Key responsibilities
- Diagnostic Troubleshooting: Perform advanced diagnostics on powershift transmissions, automatic gearboxes and multi‑axle drivelines to identify mechanical and electro‑hydraulic engagement faults.
- Component Overhauling: Disassemble, inspect, repair, rebuild and reassemble heavy‑duty drivetrain components including transmissions, torque converters, differentials, axles, final drives and wheel hubs.
- Schematic Interpretation: Read and interpret complex assembly drawings, planetary gear schematics and electro‑hydraulic transmission circuit diagrams.
- System Integration: Diagnose and repair electronic shift control systems, including transmission control valves, solenoids, speed sensors and wiring interfaces.
- Preventative Maintenance: Execute scheduled transmission and axle fluid flushes, clutch‑pack pressure testing and driveline backlash adjustments.
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate records of powertrain tolerances, shimming clearances, parts used and repair times using the company’s asset management software.
Required profile
- Diploma or technical certification in Mechanical Engineering or Automotive/Heavy Equipment Mechanics.
- Minimum five years of hands‑on experience as a drivetrain or transmission technician on heavy construction equipment.
- Proven track record working with Volvo Construction Equipment powertrains is strongly preferred.
- Certified Powertrain Technician or equivalent industry certification is advantageous.
- Ability to work in restricted positions and diverse environmental conditions, both workshop and field.
Required skills
- Advanced diagnostics of powershift and automatic transmissions.
- Disassembly, inspection, repair and reassembly of transmissions, torque converters, differentials, axles, final drives and wheel hubs.
- Interpretation of planetary gear schematics and electro‑hydraulic circuit diagrams.
- Electro‑hydraulic shift control systems, including solenoids, valves, speed sensors and wiring.
- Use of precision tools such as gear pullers, dial indicators, pressure gauges and electronic calibrators.
- NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) fault analysis.
- Heavy component lifting/rigging and workshop safety compliance.
