Heavy Equipment Electrical Engineer

About the role

The Heavy Equipment Electrical Engineer is responsible for diagnosing, troubleshooting, repairing and configuring complex electrical and electronic systems on heavy construction machinery. The role ensures optimal performance, safety and minimal downtime across multiple equipment brands, with a strong focus on Volvo Construction Equipment systems and their integration with hydraulic functions.

Key responsibilities

• Perform advanced electrical diagnostics using digital multimeters, oscilloscopes and specialised software to locate open circuits, shorts and communication faults.
• Configure, calibrate and program ECUs, displays and safety systems after component replacement or software updates.
• Interpret complex wiring diagrams, circuit schematics and network architecture maps.
• Diagnose and repair electrical faults that affect hydraulic control components such as proportional valves, solenoids and pressure sensors.
• Rebuild or replace wiring harnesses, connectors, fuse panels, alternators, starter motors and electronic sensors to OEM standards.
• Document all modifications, software versions and diagnostic logs in the company’s asset management system.

Required profile

• Diploma or technical certification in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Automotive Electrics or a related field.
• Minimum five years of hands‑on experience as an auto‑electrical technician on heavy construction equipment.
• Proven experience with Volvo Construction Equipment systems and diagnostic tools such as Volvo Tech Tool.
• Certified Heavy Equipment Electrical Technician or equivalent industry certification is advantageous.
• Ability to work in confined spaces and in both workshop and outdoor field environments.

Required skills

• DC electrical systems (12 V/24 V) and CAN‑bus (J1939) networking.
• Multiplexed wiring networks and electronic control unit (ECU) programming.
• Use of diagnostic equipment: digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, diagnostic laptops and electronic scanners.
• Electro‑hydraulic system integration, including proportional valves and solenoids.
• Electrical safety procedures: lockout/tagout, battery handling and ESD protection.
