Project Engineer – Protection

About the role

WSP is seeking a Protection Engineer to lead protection activities across transmission, sub‑transmission and distribution projects. The role involves performing system studies, configuring relay settings, and supporting field commissioning to ensure reliable and safe power system operation.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct witness relay functional tests, document results and recommend mitigation actions.
• Perform short‑circuit, protection coordination, and impact studies using tools such as CAPE.
• Develop protection requirements, review one‑line and logic diagrams, and collaborate with substation, distribution and project engineers.
• Model electrical networks, set relay parameters, and issue settings via the relay database.
• Support test technicians during commissioning, review as‑left relay files and implement necessary revisions.
• Lead innovative studies on distributed energy resources, downed conductor detection, arc‑flash analysis and grid modernization.
• Analyse post‑fault events using DFR traces and digital relay records.
• Provide field inspections, failure investigations and on‑site support during construction phases.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
• Professional engineering licence preferred.
• Strong knowledge of electrical codes, standards and protection principles.
• Proven experience in power system studies, relay configuration and project delivery.
